IIT JAM Exam Pattern

IIT JAM Exam Pattern: The examination pattern for JAM helps the appearing candidates to get an idea about the pattern of the question paper. The examination pattern of JAM gives you an idea about the type of questions, distribution of marks, penalty for wrong answers and many other important details.

Note– Appearing candidates for IIT JAM kindly note that calculators are not allowed in the examination hall. There will be the provision of an online calculator to be used in the examination.

  • Physics

  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Biotechnology
  • Biological Science
  • Mathematical Statistics

Question paper pattern for JAM

  • There will be MCQ type question and the examination will be online.
  • The duration of the examination will be 3 hours.
  • There will be 60 questions carrying total of 100 marks for the JAM question paper.

JAM Exam Pattern Details

The question paper of JAM will have 3 sections namely A, B, and C. All the 3 sections are mandatory. The detail information of the sections is as follows

Section A

 

  • Section A will have 30 questions of MCQ type carrying a total of 50 marks.
  • There will be a penalty for wrong answers.
  • From question No. 1 to 10 there will be 1 mark for every question and the penalty for wrong answers will be 1/3 marks.
  • From question No. 11 to 30 there will be 2 marks for every question and the penalty for wrong answers will be 2/3 marks.
 

Section B

 

  • Section B will have 10 questions of MSQ (Multiple Select Question) types with one or more options being correct out of 4 options given.
  • This section carries 20 marks and there will be no penalty for wrong answers.
Section C

 

  • Section C will have NAT (Numerical Answer Type) questions in which an answer is a real number and the candidates have to earn it using the virtual numerical keypad on the monitor.
  • There will not be any choice given to the candidates for these types of questions. The candidates have to give the answer after calculation.
  • There is no penalty for wrong answers for this section.
  • There will be total of 20 questions carrying total of 30 marks for this section.
  • From question no. 1 to 10 each question carries 1 mark and from question 11 to 30 each question carries 2 marks.

Note- Given exam pattern is based on previous year examination, if we found any change after the release of official notice for IIT JAM. We will update on this page.

  1. There is any error in the section 3 details – last bullet point. It should read question 11 to 20 (not 30) as it does not total correctly to 30 marks for the section C.
